About Kyle - November Student of the Month

I joined The Dojo in the summer of 8th grade and I have reached red belt. My first years at The Dojo were tough because there was a lot of pressure on me and the coronavirus pandemic didn’t help, however, I persevered and I feel much stronger physically and mentally.

Mobirise

I am a sophomore at William Mason High School. In my free time, I love to play video games like Devil May Cry and watch anime like Baki and Trigun. European and Asian history has always fascinated me. I am a resident of the pc world, I tend to tinker with old laptops or look into parts.

I am grateful for the honor of being November 2022’s student of the month and the compassion The Dojo has treated me with. I will continue to ascend the ranks and achieve my black belt.

Mobirise

More about Karthi...

Some of the things I do in my free time are playing the Violin, hanging out with my friends, and biking.

I stopped coming to the Dojo after the Pandemic, but when I was about to come back, I broke my wrist, which put a stop to my journey for the months to come.

I came back to the Dojo because I didn’t want to quit right there after all my friends and coaches helped me all the way. I wanted to expand my knowledge on Budo so I could achieve my Black belt.

April 2022 - About Shakti,

My name is Shakti Velu. I am a current 10th grader in Mason High School. Some things I do in my free time are playing Tennis, Playing videos games, and Playing the violin. I am also working on helping others with school work and things they struggle with within school, content-wise usually in classes I already took, I joined the Dojo during 2018 and kept going until a pandemic started. I didn't go to Dojo for about 2-3 years and in late 2021 I came back to the Dojo to finish my training to become a black belt. When I came back I saw a lot of new people have joined the Dojo, as well as a lot of my friends, who had achieved a lot when I was away.

Mobirise

More from Shakti,

The big reason why I came back to the dojo was to gain more knowledge and increase my confidence and after these years I can say that I have gained a lot more knowledge and wisdom from other students, and teachers of the Dojo over these years. If I could go back in time, I would have rejoined sooner and not have taken a break during my journey.

March - 2022
from Dolby Bennett:

Oft times in our lives, blessings come unawares and they are even
more appreciated because we felt undeserving for such an honor.

Being of reasonable sound mind and somewhat worn-thin in this old
body of 78, I am truly grateful to be able to participate in the learning
process of martial arts at Mason Budo Dojo.

I have been purpose-driven and goal-oriented throughout my life. Having been retired for
16 years, I needed a challenge. Mason Dojo is helping me to achieve this continuous goal of learning, sharing and building significant relationships.

Mobirise

Dolby Bennett continued...

By giving of your time and talents to others, we receive more than
we ever thought possible, thus contributing to the making of
wonderful long-lasting friendships through love and appreciation of
others. The gift of fellowship and giving is sharing your time with
others of same-mind and kindred spirits. I am fortunate to have
achieved that again through the association of my fellow members
at Mason Dojo. With time, patience and perseverance, we can
accomplish all things.

I am truly blessed and honored to be a Mason Dojo Student of the Month. Mason Dojo is not just learning the principals of martial arts. The real quality value is the continuous improvement through the dedicated teaching you receive in each class that you attend. You must put in the effort to earn and receive the value of the training.

My Mason Dojo Student of the Month document will be placed in my office on my Honored “Wall-of-Shame”
with the many other distinguished honors that I have received
throughout my life. I value this recognition.

The Dojo's
Student of the Month for February, 2022 is Rhonda Bennett

Rhonda's Journey:

I was first introduced to The Dojo when my son, Blake Norfleet ventured in and signed up. My thoughts were that it may be a passing trend and let it ride itself out. To my surprise he continued and talked often of the benefits of training in the martial arts. I am the proud mother of the Sr. Instructor Yondan 4th degree black belt at The Dojo, Blake Norfleet.

As a proud mother and now grandmother to some awesome children; Brayden (brown-white belt), Mackenzie (solid red belt) and my daughter Leah’s special gift; Jade who loves to sing with all the jubilation she can conjure. I had opportunities to help with the transporting of Brayden and Kenzie in their early stages of their Budo training, just watching the youth class and occasionally seeing the adults training I had interest, but so many reservations due to my being overweight and at an older age.

I finally got my act together and lost 70 pounds and started my fitness journey in late 2018. In the beginning of 2019, I discussed my interest in training at The Dojo with my son Blake, he stated that I could certainly try it out and see if I liked it. I also was inspired by someone already training, Kathy Merrick was, and still is, my inspiration to persevere in this martial art. Training, even at the age of 61, has given me a new self confidence that my previous self never embraced. In my quest to improve on my fighting skills, I took up boxing with a trainer. I found out that I love boxing and Budo Taijutsu! Since losing the weight I was lugging around for years, I have completely reinvented myself to a more focused, positive, and driven individual. I am what some call an exercise enthusiast and nutrition snob. If I am not working or training, you will find me researching or reading up on the human anatomy, human metabolism, nutrition, or physical exercise that can contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

Mobirise

I have so much more energy now, and I will often seek out classes at the gym, yoga center and my local RockBox, which gives me my weekly dose of my boxing. I also will be at The Dojo every time the doors are open! I still work full time and try to spend quality time with my family and husband Dolby (red-white belt) who has also grown in this martial art to love the magic that happens when you train fervently.
I continue to tell everyone about The Dojo every chance I get! It is so rewarding on a personal level; you go into it wondering if you truly can do it and you leave with all the support of everyone there! It is one big family!

January's Student of the Month
Jennifer Heringer

About Jennifer,

I started in martial arts at 8 years for one week (karate), then in my late 20s (taekwondo and kickboxing ). As much as I enjoyed training there I wanted to learn more holds and grapples. I found a Japanese jujutsu school in Indiana, which I trained at for a couple of years until I injured my knee This broke my heart that I had to quit. Then in October 2019, I began at “The Dojo” ! When I found this place I wasn’t looking for a martial arts studio, it found me. The day it found me . Of course I waited 3 or 4 months to start. In this time I was having a mental battle if I could do martial arts anymore
(I was 50 yrs old).
I was second guessing what I knew I wanted to do, so I called and set up a time to visit, then began my journey again! When I’m at the dojo I feel like my true self I feel safe, free, calm and positive. Of course I feel at home here. I love everything we do that is why I train 4 days a week, I get to improve myself while learning this ultimate art form which mentally stimulates me.

Mobirise

Everyone I have met here are wonderful, accepting, and supportive. When I’m at home I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren playing with pets. I love to cook, take walks, and take care of my plants.I have been selling makeup since I have been 18 yrs old. I view everyday as an adventure. I get enjoyment out of helping people and making them smile! I am so grateful for the amazing experiences I get when stepping on the mat. For me: Budotaijutsu has everything I want to learn in a martial art! I believe it is the best it reminds me of self it has layers. I’m so glad Budo found Me it has changed my life completely, I’m extremely happy and lucky to have the opportunity to train. Looking forward to continuing my journey!!!

November, 2021  - Aditya Singh

My name is Aditya Singh and I am a 9th grader who currently goes to Walnut Hills. I love to code and make new websites and games with it. I also enjoy playing video games, piano, and also enjoy going to the Dojo to learn new things every day. I also love writing and am currently working on a story that is around 15,000 words and I am still expanding on it. I usually get my ideas by reading as that is what I do for more than half the time on the weekend.
I came to the Dojo back in early 2016 around April or May and I loved it the second I came. It was fun and interesting to learn how to defend yourself if you were ever attacked outside.
I stayed in the Dojo until 2019 when I decided to quit because I thought the Dojo would have been too much work for me to catch up to, because I had just moved to a college prep school.
I regret it.

I never regret coming back and am thoroughly enjoying my time in the Dojo. I also love to write stories in my free time and expand on them.

October 2021 's Student of the Month was Caleb Nicholls

Caleb is currently an eighth grader at St. Susanna School. He realizes that his dojo training prepares him both physically and mentally for what may lay ahead in life. Caleb has committed himself to studying one class per week at the Dojo to best accommodate his myriad of other extracurricular activities. He is extremely thankful The Dojo’s schedule allows him flexibility in his busy schedule.

She finds training immensely practical on a weekly basis. The Dojo provides her a way to deal with a turbulent past, a focus and assurance of being able to defend herself if the unforeseen should happen, and a very vibrant way to learn a new skill set while challenging the body’s inertia of sedentariness.

May's Student of the Month was Heath Weber

Heath began martial arts at the Dojo late in 2017. He actually brought his son in to try a youth class, but he’s the one who actually started training. He’s had an interest in martial arts for quite some time, but just could never make time for it. In fact, that’s one of the reasons why the Dojo works for him. Its multiple classes during the week give him the flexibility to attend those that work for him while still making sure he makes it to all of this children’s activities.

Heath enjoys exercising, so taking classes at the Dojo was just another way to keep his body moving. But even more than that, he enjoys the mental aspect of training. “I think most people think of the physical benefits of martial arts training, but I’d argue the mental benefits are just as important. Adults, in particular, need to get out of their comfort zone and try new things. That’s how you grow and become more confident as a human being. The Dojo, fortunately, offers a perfect setting for students to emerge as better people.”

Mobirise

Heath likes attending the weekly Tenchijin classes.

Outside of the Dojo, Heath enjoys spending time with his family, doing anything outdoors, and working on a variety of “DIY”
projects around his house.

April's Student of the Month
was Dale Rook:

About Dale:

Dale came to us two years ago. When asked about what brought him in, he replied “I’m over 50, over weight, and out of shape. I can do something about 2 of the 3 and it starts here.” Dale was a student of Tae Kwon Do a long time ago and participated in several full contact matches during his college years. He’s always had an interest in martial arts and found our school to offer the best benefits, especially as we lose the athletic ability of our youth.

Dale says he hasn’t felt this good in decades. “I’m able to move much better and feel like a kid again” he says. He plans to train well past his black belt.

As an engineer, Dale really enjoys the aspect of body mechanics used in our art. He really likes the Taijustsu taught here along with the weapons training, favoring the hanbo, kuboton and knife techniques. “I like how the weapons training enhances our regular training, enforcing the concepts of timing and distance”

Mobirise

Outside of the Dojo, Dale works as an electrical engineer with over 30 years experience specializing in power distribution. He has a “small” fishing addiction and enjoys just about anything outdoors. He is an avid reader and enjoys many genres including Fantasy/Science Fiction, Horror, Military fiction/non-fiction, or just about any good story. At a certain time of the year, Dale portrays a jolly old elf to raise monies for charity. His favorite charity is the Dragonfly Foundation, but he says anything that helps kids in need is a worthy cause.

Student of the Month
Jorge Serna

Jorge writes:

When I was 6 years old, I practiced Karate. I obtained my black belt at the age of 12. I wasn’t really excited the style I learned; I was looking for something that would be able to be applied in real life.
At the age of 23, I decided to come to USA. Six years later I got married, had I child his name is Javier.
One day, I was passing by the dojo and saw 'ninjutsu martial arts' sign. I right away stopped and asked for information. I realized this is what I wished I could’ve had studied as I child. We loved the philosophy engrained into it. So, I enrolled my son. He eventually achieved his black belt at the age of 11 years old.
I was so proud of my son’s first accomplishment; it did help to build his confidence and self-discipline.

Now, it was my turn to continue the path on martial arts, So, I’ve been over two years climbing the mountain. I promised my son Javier that I will get my black belt.
I love The Dojo. It is my second home. We treat each other with respect, no judgment whatsoever and full of positiveness.
